Dear Ms. Giddings,
This project has acted like a resource through allowing me to contemplate and understand that memory that I wrote about in the memoir through the lens of narrative. Its helped me better un derstand the feelings that I had in the memory that I wrote about. I realized the prevalence of litter and how easy it is to ignore as a problem because you can’t really do stuff about it in the moment and it doesn’t have any immedi ate, obvious effects either. Throughout the wri ting process, I pondered how to use narrative to show this and made many choices during this writing process.
2 of the most significant choices I made during this project were the following: deciding to make the whole thing about the most recent time that I walked around my neighborhood, and also deciding to make my memoir with the strategy of evoking the images that I saw on my walk and filling it with the sights I saw. I made the first choice because I thought it was fitting with the theme of litter, because that was a li ttle moment from my life where I had to deal with litter. It wasn’t very significant in the moment, which was an idea I was trying to convey in my flash memoir. The idea that litter doesn’t immediately appear harmful even though it will end up as a problem. This was also done because it was one of the more vivid memories I had of litter, where I encountered a lot of it.
Best regards,
Steven
